Description

This classic oleograph captures a tender moment of maternal devotion and divine childhood from Hindu lore.

Composition & Subject: The image depicts Mother Yashoda cradling the child Lord Krishna on her lap while seated on an elevated marble platform inside an arched court veranda. To her left, a seated woman (often identified as a attendant or relative) gazes lovingly at the young Krishna, gently touching his foot.

Artistic Details:

Yashoda is draped in a rich, deep red saree with gold borders, adorned with traditional jewelry and flowers in her hair.

Young Krishna wears a jeweled crown (mukut), a sacred thread, ankle bells, and delicate neck ornaments, holding a small sweet treat (laddu) in his hand.

The attendant wears a bright yellow saree with contrasting striped pallu.

The backdrop highlights Ravi Varma’s iconic synthesis of European realism and Indian iconography—featuring heavy drapery, soft natural lighting from the arched window, marble tiled floors, and a brass water vessel (lota).
